Every year, in the UK, the miracle of cornea transplantation helps to restore the sight of more than 2,000 blind and partially sighted people. But the shortage of donated corneas means that many more could be given the opportunity to see again if only more people would donate their corneas. Donated corneas are then stored in Corneal Transplant Service Eye Banks in Bristol and Manchester but can only be kept for up to four weeks. The corneas are distributed for transplantation on request through NHS UK Transplant to 150 cornea transplant units around the UK.
